1969 Mr Universe Arnold Schwarzenegger

The 1969 Nabba Universe was held in London. They used to have two separate contests for amateurs and professionals.

The ruling to be called 'Professional' was simple: Full time instructor in health studio or gyms, professional athletes, full time gym owner or those who devote their living to bodybuilding.

Following countries were represented: Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Germany, Austria, Lebanon, Japan, France, England, Italy, Belgium, USA, Sweden and many others.

Bodybuilding Stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger 'The Austrian Oak', Serge Nubret 'The Black Panther' , Boyer Coe and Franco Columbo were present.

Professional Class 1

arnold schwarzenegger 1969 mr universe

Arnold was in the professional class and he competed against Frenchman Serge Nubret and Dennis Tinerino. Three of the world's greatest physiques.

Oscar Heidenstam (President of Mr. Universe): "No one could match the massive Arnold Schwarzenegger, who in everybody's opinion, was much better than last year. Furthermore, if you must use modern jargon, he was all "cut up." Truly fantastic and a very conclusive winner. Dennis Tinerino disaoppointed, but still determined to take this title was second and Serge Nubret third."

Some facts about Arnold's rivals Serge Nubret and Dennis Tinerino

Serge Nubret Mr Universe

Serge Nubret (1938 – April 19, 2011) was born on the small French isle of Guadeloupe. He was one of the best in Bodybuilding History. Nubret dedicated himself to weight bodybuilding. According to him lifting weights become his reason for breathing and living.

Serge Nubret: "Good upper body but no legs" was the common explanation for Serge's lack of top title. Thus he attacked his weak points: Thousands of squats, hacks, and extensions later his legs came up to balance with rest.

Dennis Tinerino

Dennis Tinerino Arnold Schwarzenegger 1969 Mr. Universe

Dennis Tinerino (1945 – May 7, 2010) is unknown to today's bodybuilding generation and that's a tragedy. He was quite often on line up with Arnold Schwarzenegger (Mr. Universe 1967/68/69 and Mr. Olympia 1980).

He was born in 1945, in Brooklyn, New York, grew up in poverty and crime and still managed to became the winner of the 1967 Mr. America contest.

In 1964, at age 19, Tinerino won the AAU Teen Mr. America and the AAU Junior Mr. USA. He liked to squat very heavy. He used to squat over 600 pounds for reps and for the Mr. Universe contest he squatted 450lb for 30 reps.

Despite finishing second to Arnold, Dennis maintained friendship with Arnold. One day he received an invitation to the inauguration of Arnold. Dennis: "Reflecting back on the years that I have known Arnold, I think politics was the last thing on his mind.

Boyer Coe Bodybuilding

Above you can see Boyer Coe; one of the Greats of the Golden Age of Bodybuilding. He won the Mr. America title in the same year. Boyer's length of his training career is outstanding. He trains almost daily at 71!

Oscar Heidenstam:
"This was the toughest class of the contest, with so many really fantastic men, twenty in all, presenting the judges with a real headache.

The contestants included current Mr. America, Boyer Coe, and I think he was surprised to know how well known he was this side of Atlantic. I know that all our enthusiasts are very familiar with all the top Americans, whatever camp they are associated with, yet, many of our really top and great personalities and unknown in the States.

We found Boyer every bit as great as his reputation and his posing was superb. In fact we encourage better posing so much and Boyer was the winner of this particular award.

Boyer Coe Roy Callender Mr Universe

But Boyer had to fight all the way against a truly fantastic Roy Callender (number 28) of Barbados but a resident of Britain. Roy has been in the States for a contest, but during the past year he has transformed himself and I would reckon him to be one of the greatest physiques ever seen in this country.

He is truly massive but still well defined or "cut" as you so often say in the States. I hate this expression "all cut up" as if a butcher had been at work; why not used the long standing expression defined.

Third was the amazing Al Beckles (number 23), also of Barbados, but residing in Britain.

Amateur Class 1 - Over 5'9"

Jim Haislop MR Universe

Jim Haislop of Tampa. He was a Navy man and served aboard the U.S.S. Vulcan out of Norfolk, Va.

He was often compared to Steve Reeves due to his small waist and broad shoulders. His major wins included the 1968 AAU Mr. America contest and placing first in his height class at the 1969 NABBA Amateur Mr. Universe contest.

Oscar Heidenstam: "Jim Haislop was making his second appearance at our contests. He has every attribute a Mr. Universe winner should have, and would be such a wonderful person to carry the title. It was a clear win in his height class for Jim; no one taking any other firsts.

1969 mr universe Jim Haislop Frank Richard Karl Keinrath

Second place proved a harder one to decide between our sensational current Mr. Britain, Frank Richard (number 47) and the much improved Austrian, Karl Keinrath, also making a second appearance.

Karl will be another Arnold, I feel, one of these days. Frank was a little less defined than when he won our Britain, if bigger. He took the second place, with Karl third."

Amateur Class 3

Franco Columbo Mr Universe

Oscar Heidenstam: "This was a clear cut victory for the sensational Italian-Austrian, Franco Colombo, who has just been visiting USA and doubtless was seen by some of you. This man muscularly is quite sensational, but can a man of this height win an overall title? Who knows, he may be the first.

Second and also quite clearly was the massive Adolph Zeigner of Austria. At 5'6" this man weighs over 200lb and is really phenomenal.

Third was Egyptian Mohammed Hamdy, a very proportionate athlete."

Professional Class 2

John Citrone Arnold Schwarzenegger

Oscar Heidenstam: "The short class was not as tough as some of the amateurs ones, but produced some really wonderful physqiues. A new face emerged in Kassem Yasbek of Syria, one of the most beautiful physqiues of the whole contest.

John Citrone (above picture) of Britain, a short man who packs more muscle on a small frame than I have ever seen before was the winner.

His strength act is really something and he can bench press well 500lb at around 178lb.

Kassem Yasbek of Syria was a comfortable second. Luigi Lodi of Italy, a former Mr. Europe winner was third."
